I see I need to have a minimum English level of Elementary to enrol. How do I know what my current level of English level?

Yes, you should have at least an Elementary level of English to study with us.  If you haven’t sat an official assessment before the following information may help you.

Please note you will also be sent a free indicator assessment once you apply.

A1 (Beginner):

  • You know simple phrases like "Hello" or "How are you?"
  • You can introduce yourself and give basic information like your name and age.
  • Example Sentences:some text

A2 (Elementary):

  • You understand common words and simple sentences about things like shopping or asking for directions.
  • You can ask and answer questions in short conversations about everyday topics.

    • "The bank is next to the supermarket."

B1 (Intermediate):

  • You understand the main ideas when people speak clearly about familiar topics like work, school, or travel.
  • You can talk to people about simple subjects and write short emails or notes.

    • "I have to finish this project by Friday."
    • "The museum is very interesting, and the art is beautiful."

B2 (Upper Intermediate):

  • You understand main ideas in complex conversations about more general topics like news, sports, or hobbies.
  • You can talk to people easily, even about new or unfamiliar topics, and write longer emails or reports.
  • Example Sentences:some text
    • "I believe the new law will have a big impact on the economy."
    • "We need to improve our team's performance to win the next match."

C1 (Advanced):

  • You understand longer texts and can recognize hidden meanings in conversations.
  • You can speak and write English confidently in school, work, and social situations.

    • "I think the author's use of symbolism adds depth to the novel."

C2 (Proficient):

  • You can understand almost everything you read or hear in English.
  • You can speak, write, and explain complex ideas fluently and clearly.

    • "The philosopher's argument is compelling because it balances theoretical rigor with practical application."

What nationalities go to ABC?

Variety of nationalities throughout Asia, South America and Europe.

When will I receive accommodation confirmation?

You will receive a confirmation of accommodation from Shotover Lodge within 48 hours of completing your booking.

What are the communal facilities?

Fully equipped kitchen, lounge room, free pool table, couches, television and fireplace. Outdoor BBQ area & outdoor open fireplace.

How can I secure accommodation?

Once you have booked and made a payment, we can confirm your accommodation booking. Homestay accommodation is not automatically guaranteed and will rely on the availability of an appropriate host for the duration of your request.

How does the laundry work?

Laundry facilities are a low price of $4 per wash and $4 per dry. Other shared areas include our fully equipped kitchen and our spacious guest lounge. The lounge is decked out with a pool table, fireplace, couches, television and dining tables.

How easy is it to get around?

The closest bus station is just a 3-minute walk from the school. Queenstown Airport is only a 20-minute bus ride away.

How far away is Shotover Lodge from Queenstown?

Shotover Lodge is located in Arthurs Point, just a 7 minute drive from Queenstown, and 15 minutes from Arrowtown. Just down the road from the world-famous Shotover River.

How will I get to my homestay when I arrive in Queenstown?

We offer transport from Queenstown Airport to your homestay (95 NZD)

Can I change the intake dates for my applicant?

If you require any amendments to your booking, you can contact Admissions directly at admissions@qrc.ac.nz. Requests are not guaranteed and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Is there Wi-Fi?

An unlimited internet allowance is included as part of your stay.

When will we get an offer letter?

You will receive an offer letter within 24 hours of submitting your booking.

What do I need to bring on my first day?

Bring your documentation, including your visa, passport, and insurance if applicable. Bring some comfortable walking shoes, and of course, bring a smile!

What are the placement tests for?

These are tests to see what level of English you are for your reading, writing, speaking and listening. They are to help place you in the correct class for your abilities.

What if it snows on my first day?!

If the school is closed for your first day, we will let you know via email. If you think this might happen, feel free to contact us in advance at reception@qrc.ac.nz.

What are the benefits of a homestay?

Students who stay with ABC College of English personally selected homestay families experience a great opportunity to learn and practise their English naturally, in everyday life situations.

What can I expect of the homestay environment?

A typical New Zealand homestay house has gardens and lawns. Each student has their own separate room.

What does the Twin Bedroom have?

Sleeps up to 2 persons with 2 single beds. Has an ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet, kitchenette, microwave and refrigerator, flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, as well as balcony/patio with outdoor table and chairs.

What does the homestay include?

TV, Towels, Bedding/linen, Access to laundry service, Access to Wifi in building (Free WIFI), Heating, Air conditioning, Shared bathroom.

What is the homestay minimum age?

18 years

What meals are provided with the homestay?

All homestays include breakfast and dinner Monday – Friday, and all meals during weekends and Public Holidays.

What programmes do you have?

We currently offer General English and Academic English. More courses coming in the future!

Where is the campus located?

ABC College of English Queenstown is located in the city of Queenstown, on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, on New Zealand's South Island. The school is located in the heart of Queenstown, with many eateries, bars and interesting venues nearby. Attractions within walking distance of the school include Queenstown Bay Beach, several extreme sports venues such as Shotover Canyon Swing, iFLY Indoor Skydiving and green areas such as Queenstown Gardens. There are also various supermarkets, amenities and links to public transport nearby. The popular Queenstown Bay is a 3-minute walk from the school and has fantastic views of the mountains and Lake Wakatipu.

Conveniently located in the centre of Queenstown, across from Queenstown Gardens and close to the shops, banks and bus stop. Ability to combine English language learning and an adventure activity experience such as snowboarding.

Will I know my homestay family before I arrive in New Zealand?

The school inform students of their homestay family details before their departure for New Zealand.

Do you provide accommodation?

Yes. 95% of our students reside at our Student Residence, Shotover Lodge. Homestay is available, subject to availability. Book early and for the full duration of study to avoid disappointment!

Is my accommodation guaranteed?

We can often provide students with their accommodation requests, however, Queenstown is a very busy place and occasionally accommodation does book out. You will be notified if this is the case, and we always recommend booking with plenty of time in advance to avoid disappointment!

How far in advance do we have to pay?

You need to pay at the time of your booking. It is important to confirm details with your client prior to finalising your booking.

What hours will I be studying?

8.30am - 1.00pm. 30 minute break at 10.30am.

Can I work while I am studying?

Generally, yes. If you study for 14 weeks or more on a student visa you may be entitled to 20hrs per week. You can also work if you have a working holiday visa. Always check the conditions on your visa for specific details.
